My name is Ian James Brown, I create & paint abstract artworks to music.
Music is my life & completely in sync with the creative process. Whether it’s painting, experimenting in sketchbooks, making handmade & digital collages, digital animations, learning Ableton - music is always there to inspire me.
Music for me turns the creative process into a meditative experience. The freedom to express yourself & make marks without judgement.
I am on journey of transformation and my musical tastes reflect that, I like rhythmic music you can get lost in, a current playlist may include Andrew Weatherall - Tool - Frank Zappa - Vox Low - Nine Inch Nails - Play Pal Music - Amon Duul II - Harmonia - The Melvins - Steve Von Till
In recent years seeking beauty has become the priority; whether it be in nature, books, photographs, films & literature. I have a series of sketchbooks permanently in development experimenting with lines, forms & shapes.
In alignment with this ethos I have begun creating musical playlists, a project where I create one per year, dedicating my spare to time to listening & to see what can be brought into existence through sound. At some point in the near future I hope to share these with you all. There are no rules; any track from any genre can be played, there is no track limit and I include Monty Python and spoken word edits as opportunities for interludes and experimentation.
The last 5 years has been a remarkable journey for me, the dedication to learn and become the person I have always wished to be, using my artwork as the vehicle to express & share this process with the world.
To tie in within my personal transformation I will also have exciting news to share with you in the near future about a new creative venture & journey I have just embarked upon. ‘Source Material’ was born during a visit to Edinburgh and a painting afternoon with a friend, I am looking to see how we can offer the potential of change through creative exercises. More to follow.
Finally my interest and love for stop frame animation has also been rekindled and I have started a new creative project ‘Fluid_Distortion’; expanding my creative interests and potential for wonder.
Every piece created is a unique experience and a limited edition of one.
